Conservative reactions to the partial release of documents involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this transparent with the American people about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo outlining the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt significant concerns about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately called for greater openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Commentators Swing Behind the Release
However, some conservative pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.
But some do not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, enabled certain rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Muted
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the political right was relatively muted after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that preceded the legislative approval to enact a law requiring the documents' publication.
The commentator, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were provided physical folders of files that included no new data.
