Trumpism's most revealing and characteristic moments – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. In the course of a few weeks, the American president commenced revealing everyone his intentions for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions compared to the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to erect it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the present calculation of fatalities due to his slashing to foreign assistance is 600,000 and increasing, and recently research projected his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have attempted – really, no former commander would have contemplated – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom have business with federal agencies.

As bewildering as it is to watch the president attempt to overturn the old idea regarding democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we were raised with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of compassion into a symbol of animosity who approves specifically the brutality that he criticized in the Gospel; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, through multiple decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Jesus from my upbringing, because theoretically the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and because the fastest-growing cadre of Americans could have minimal awareness of him since they are atheists or uncertain individuals or nones. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of significant worth in biblical accounts.
It is unquestionably absolutely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch emerging; instead, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to evade undercover officers. The child matures in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his message is about love for fellow humans, especially for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and protecting. Jesus' answer to violence is to offer the other cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a way to teach the aggressor; his method regarding offenses states that when a person pilfers your jacket you should give him your sweater too.
The apparent and straightforward fact that the Savior of the gospels advocates for a form of radical love centered on the impoverished is what has always made Christianity rather a provocative belief system: appealing to the populace, but due to its natural unconventionality demanding to be contained. In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so widespread that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Finest Among Us
Hence I have become inspired to see the steadfast resistance to Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has been substantial consolation to participate in developing the campaign that has protested openly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated electorate to turn out in large quantities during minor elections.
